An emerging New Venture in Toronto, ON
In 2018, the Toronto Restaurant Alliance launched as a New Venture. This ministry, led by Pastor David Pan, ministered to marginalized restaurant workers in the Greater Toronto Area. Over time, members of the ministry noticed many elderly retired people in need of connection in the area. In 2019, Pastor David began leading a monthly Bible study with a handful of retirees. The pandemic stalled gatherings for a time, but the group has since grown exponentially. Now, on the first Monday of the month, 60-70 people coming from different nearby retirement buildings gather for this worship. In just four years, nearly 30 people were baptized!
This ministry is now officially launching as a New Venture called Toronto Evergreen Alliance. The team’s vision is to share the Gospel with seniors in the area, and point them to Jesus through worship gatherings, daily visits and regular care. David shares: “We want to reach the community and surrounding area with the love of Jesus by looking after the elderly, the widows and the lonely—and caring for them like Jesus would.” There is currently a possibility of breaking off into two separate groups, Cantonese and Mandarin, so members can worship in their heart language.
Eventually, David and the team hope to begin weekly Sunday worship services in different senior residences. As they anticipate the future, they also pray that younger people would join this New Venture in the future, so a multi-generational Chinese expression of church would be formed.
This New Venture is supported by the Canadian Chinese Alliance Churches Association (CCACA) and the Eastern Canadian District. The Toronto Evergreen Alliance team is also developing partnerships with Chinese Alliance churches in the GTA, that will be praying, supporting and participating in this ministry.
